Captiva Island

Captiva and her sister island, Sanibel, were named by Money Magazine (Nov. 2002) as one of the top 10 vacation spots in the world, calling Captiva a family-friendly beach-lover's paradise. While relaxing on the screened-in lanai you will see dolphins swim by everyday, and blue herons as tall as four feet that you can photograph from only inches away. You can go shelling every day and pick up over 400 different varieties of shells for world-class shelling fun. The Gulf of Mexico is a clear, aquamarine color that is warm and calm, and you will find it soothing to your body and your soul.

In the evening as you relax with your glass of wine or favorite cocktail, you will see some of the most beautiful sunsets you have ever seen with a mélange of colors that will have you coming back for more. There really is nothing like it. This place is special!

If fishing is your thing, you can throw a line right off the beach, or off the dock out back in the bay, or you can take any number of charter fishing trips to catch all kinds of fish such as snook, tarpon, snapper, or grouper, just to name a few! You can even enter a tournament that if you win, can more than pay for your vacation!

If you enjoy wildlife, then the Ding Darling Preserve, minutes away, is a 6,000 acre refuge and home to over 238 species of birds (and they are beautiful!), over 50 types of reptiles, at least 32 different mammals, with winding canoe trails. You can also walk, bike, or tram through it, either guided or not. It's fabulous!

If boating is your passion, there are cruises for dolphin watching, sunset watching, or island hopping to remote and historic islands such as Cabbage Key or Useppa Islands. There are shelling cruises and evening cruises that feature island musicians. You can also rent boats, jet skis, kayaks, wind surfing and water skiing equipment, or take a water taxi and explore on your own.

If staying in shape is your thing, besides walking the gorgeous beaches and swimming in the beautiful calm, warm Gulf or heated pool, you can go bike riding everywhere, or go to the Sanibel Fitness Center just 10 minutes away for all kinds of classes like pilates, spinning, aerobics, step, yoga, body sculpting, or use machines or free weights. They have it all!

In Captiva, when it comes to dining, here are our favorites. All are within walking distance from Captiva Shores right off the beach. Can't beat that! Some of the restaurants deliver too!

  • The Bubble Room - Sheer nostalgia, Christmas and Hollywood all rolled into one. Be sure to save room for dessert! It's a fun place.
  • Canoe & Kayak's - waterfront restaurant is good for a casual lunch with a great view.
  • Crow's Nest Island Pub - at Tween Waters - watch the Nascrab races and listen to live music too!
  • Green flash - another waterfront spot with great food and a laid back atmosphere.
  • The Muckey Duck, RC Otters and Chadwicks - all offer fabulous seafood buffets that you should try.
  • King's Crown Dining Room - If you would like to dress up one evening, try this restaurant in the South Seas Resort. The award-wining chefs create exceptional food in a romantic atmosphere. And, they have a piano bar to add to the ambiance.

Well, we've tried to give you an idea of some of the many things you can do while relaxing at our townhouse at Captiva Shores. There is so much more, or you can do what we like to do - NOTHING!

Even doing nothing is great when you're in Captiva!!
